A tattoo stencil is the initial drawing or the basic outline of a tattoo design. It serves as a template allowing the artist to accurately recreate the tattoo design. Tattoo stencils are temporarily transferred to the skin. It makes use of a special transferable ink that sticks on the surface of the skin. The ink is often made from vegetable dyes with a small amount of glue which can be removed with oil-based cream.

Tattoo stencils can be bought at any tattoo supply shop. It comes on a wide variety of designs which range from the most simple flower tattoo to an elaborate dragon design. There are also blank stencil papers which allow the artist or the customer to create his or her design.
